Oakland's wildfire vegetation inspection season begins in June, and inspectors require roofs and rain gutters cleared of pine needles, leaves and other dead vegetation. Standards include at least 30 feet of defensible space, tree limbs removed within 6 feet of the ground, grass cut to 3 inches or less and mulch no deeper than 12 inches.
Living on the Hayward Fault
Montclair runs from the valley formed by the Hayward Fault up the western slope of the Oakland Hills. The pond in Montclair Park was dug in a natural dip in the terrain, a sag basin the fault created, and creep is damaging Broadway Terrace at the south entrance to Lake Temescal. The fault creeps less than half a centimeter a year, so its effects on a house accumulate slowly, showing up in door frames and trim joints over many years rather than overnight.
Narrow roads and where to park
In the 1991 firestorm, narrow, winding hill roads crowded with parked cars blocked emergency vehicles. Oakland's inspection standards also call for 10 feet of horizontal and 13.5 feet of vertical vegetation clearance along roadsides.
