The Hayward Fault under Arlington Boulevard
The Hayward Fault passes through El Cerrito, generally following Arlington Boulevard, and the area immediately beside it is a special study zone with added development restrictions. The city's general plan names slope stability, ground shaking, fault rupture and liquefaction as its main geologic concerns: upland areas carry moderate to high landslide risk, the flatter areas the highest shaking risk, and small areas along Baxter and Cerrito creeks high liquefaction potential. Cosmetic repairs are handyman work; anything structural is not.
Creeks in private backyards
Eight major watersheds drain through El Cerrito, and because of how the city developed, a large share of its creeks and drainage channels run on or under private property, including stretches of Cerrito Creek.
