The freeway, BART and the buried creek
In the 1960s the state demolished hundreds of houses, multi-unit buildings and businesses along a strip through Temescal and Rockridge for the Grove-Shafter Freeway and BART; the first freeway section opened in 1969. Temescal Creek was diverted into culverts, and in 1975 its last open stretch was buried in concrete. Frog Park now runs three blocks along Claremont Avenue, from Hudson to Clarke streets, over the culverted creek. The houses left on the surrounding blocks are the ones that survived that clearance.
Borrowing tools before calling someone
Temescal is home to the Oakland Tool Lending Library at the Temescal branch library, where residents can borrow tools for home projects. It is a good resource for a simple job.
