Gutter cleaning Sunnyvale

Sunnyvale gutters, from Taaffe Street magnolias to flat Eichler roofs

Sunnyvale prunes about 40,000 street trees itself but leaves the debris they drop in the right-of-way to residents, and its rules on touching those trees are tight. Without a permit, only branches under an inch may be cut, from the ground, with hand tools and no ladder. So a gutter cleaner clears what lands in the gutter and leaves the limbs alone. Leaves go in the weekly yard trimmings cart, and nothing but rain may enter a storm drain.

Near-flat Eichler roofs and red tile on Taaffe Street

Sunnyvale's Eichler Design Guidelines, adopted in 2009, ask owners in the Eichler tracts to keep flat or shallow roof forms, no steeper than 3:12, along with the wide overhangs and exposed beams that go with them. The Taaffe-Frances Heritage Neighborhood, on the 500 blocks of Taaffe and Frances Streets, is the opposite case: its guidelines describe Spanish Revival houses with low-pitched red tile roofs, small overhangs and stucco walls, set behind substantial street trees and planted parking strips. Along Taaffe, those include magnolias that residents bought and planted in 1937 or 1938, now among the most scenic streetscapes in the city.

The work

What a Sunnyvale gutter visit covers, roof by roof

  1. Sweetgum balls in the troughs and outlets

Liquidambar, the sweetgum, has its own line in Sunnyvale's budget: each year the city sets aside funding to remove a limited number of these street trees, because their hard, round, spiny seedpods become tripping hazards. Cal Poly's SelecTree database describes the tree as deciduous, with fall color, and says its gum balls fall in spring. A house under one gets leaves in autumn and seedpods months later, so a single clean-out a year leaves part of the load in the gutter.

  2. Fitting the clean-out into the yard cart

Specialty Solid Waste and Recycling, Sunnyvale's hauler, empties the yard trimmings cart weekly and offers it in 64 and 96 gallon sizes. Grass, leaves, small branches and other garden trimmings belong in it. Anything that will not fit with the lid closed can go in the owner's own 32-gallon can labeled Yard Waste, set beside the cart, and branches can go out in bundles no larger than 4 feet by 1 foot. The hauler composts the material, and residents can pick up that compost at the SMaRT Station.

  3. Leaves on a near-flat Eichler roof

On an Eichler the clean-out reaches past the gutter. The guidelines describe flat and low-pitched roofs under wide overhangs, and on a roof that shallow, leaves can sit on the surface instead of sliding down to the trough. Ask for the roof surface and any roof drains to be cleared in the same visit. Where an Eichler is being re-roofed under a current permit, the city's final inspection list includes checking that overflow drains are clean.

Permits and local rules

Sunnyvale rules that decide who touches what

  1. The city prunes street trees; the debris is yours

A street tree in Sunnyvale is one whose trunk sits in the city right-of-way, which runs from the face of the curb about 11 feet into the property. In older neighborhoods that is the strip between curb and sidewalk; in newer ones, where curb, gutter and sidewalk are one piece, the trees stand on the house side of the sidewalk. The city maintains about 40,000 of them and removes only trees that are dead, dying, damaged or hazardous, while residents clear the tree debris in the right-of-way.

  2. No ladders without a tree work permit

Municipal Code 13.16.060 requires a permit for work on a city street tree, and the exception the city allows is narrow: low branches or brush pruned with non-powered hand tools, standing on the ground, with no ladder or climbing gear, on branches under 1 inch across. Anything more needs a street tree work permit, requested by the owner of the house next to the tree, reviewed over at least 21 business days, and carried out by an ISA Certified Arborist whose firm holds a D-49 or C-27 license and a Sunnyvale business license.

  3. Rain is the only thing a storm drain may take

Sunnyvale sits in the 85-square-mile West Valley watershed, and its creeks and channels carry storm drain water straight to San Francisco Bay. The city's water pollution page draws the line plainly: water from sinks and toilets is treated at the Water Pollution Control Plant, water in the storm drains is not, only rainwater is permitted in a storm drain, and anything else put into one is illegal. Leaf sludge flushed out of a downspout and across the driveway counts as anything else.

  4. A re-roof ends with a gutter check

Sunnyvale's re-roof requirements, revised in December 2025 for building permits submitted on or after January 1, 2026, list gutters among the final inspection items. The inspector checks that installed gutters are provided with a means to prevent leaves and debris from accumulating, and that overflow drains are clean. Flashing is required where the roof meets its gutters, in at least 26-gauge corrosion-resistant galvanized metal. A house due for a new roof will meet the gutter question at the end of the job.

Timing

Autumn leaves, spring gum balls and a 21-day tree permit

Under sweetgums the calendar has two peaks: leaves in autumn and seedpods in spring, so a clean-out after each beats one big visit a year. If tree work is part of the plan, start early. Sunnyvale asks for at least 21 business days to review a street tree work permit and warns it can take longer in bad weather, when crews are busy with damaged and downed trees. The city's sweetgum removal funding is fully allocated through fiscal year 2027/28, and applications for 2028/29 open the second week of July 2027.

Before you hire

Settle these before a Sunnyvale cleaner climbs up

  • If a street tree overhangs the roof, ask that its branches be left alone unless the city has issued a tree work permit.
  • Ask that leaves and gum balls go in your yard cart, with any overflow in a 32-gallon can labeled Yard Waste.
  • Ask them to flush the downspouts onto planting beds, not down the driveway to a storm drain.
  • On a flat Eichler roof, ask for the roof surface and any drains to be cleared as well as the gutter.
  • Re-roofing soon? Ask the roofer how the gutters will pass the city's debris-protection check at final inspection.

Questions

Sunnyvale gutter questions with the city's own answers

Will Sunnyvale remove the sweetgum that keeps filling our gutters?

Not for its litter. The city removes street trees only when they are dead, dying, damaged or a hazard. It does set aside money each year to take out a limited number of liquidambars because of their spiny seedpods, but that funding is fully allocated through fiscal year 2027/28, with applications for 2028/29 opening in July 2027. An owner can also apply for a permit to remove and replace a street tree at their own expense.

Can the gutter cleaner snip the street tree's twigs while on the ladder?

No. Without a permit, Sunnyvale allows pruning of a street tree only from the ground, with non-powered hand tools and no ladder or climbing equipment, and only on branches under 1 inch across. Twigs reached from a ladder fall outside that. Anything beyond it needs a street tree work permit and an ISA Certified Arborist, and the city reviews the application over at least 21 business days.

What won't Sunnyvale's yard trimmings cart take from a clean-out?

The hauler lists palm fronds, ice plant, cactus, yucca, poison oak, poison ivy, bamboo and ivy, along with rocks, gravel, concrete, asphalt, bricks, dirt, sod, plastic bags and building materials such as wood, metal or sheetrock. Stumps, and branches larger than 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet long, are refused too. A cart holding any of them may be left unemptied, with a tag explaining why.

Is the big oak behind our Sunnyvale house protected?

Measure its trunk's circumference 4 and a half feet above the ground. A single-trunk tree of 38 inches or more is protected, as is a multi-trunk tree with one trunk of 38 inches or with trunks that add up to at least 113 inches. A protected private tree needs a permit to be removed. The city provides no services for private trees, so keeping one healthy, and its leaves out of the gutters, falls to the owner.

Do new gutters in Sunnyvale have to come with guards?

When the roof is replaced under a building permit submitted since January 1, 2026, the final inspection checks that installed gutters have a means to keep leaves and debris from accumulating. The requirements sheet does not name a product, so ask the roofer what they propose. Outside a permitted re-roof, the sheet does not apply.
